We met at Truluck’s Seafood Steak & Crab House, a fantastic restaurant in La Jolla’s Golden Triangle, and he traveled all the way from Florida to California just to meet me! His name? Chionoecetes Bairdi (he’s a bit humiliated by this bland, scientific reference and prefers instead to be called by his moniker, Florida Stone Crab). Arriving tableside, he was impeccably and irresistibly dressed in black and a lush salmon color. After much admiration I could no longer refuse his lure, and dove carelessly into an evening of heavenly decadence. Enticing flavors of sweet, juicy crab lightly spritzed with fresh lemon … yes, I was lovestruck at Truluck’s by my Florida connection …
… until a dashing Aleutian aristocrat with spectacularly long legs arrived at my table. Now what? Captivated by the monarchical presence of my new Alaskan beau, I pushed the Floridian aside and began plucking succulent bites of snow-white crab meat from his crimson shell. After a squeeze of fresh lemon, I doused the bites in warm, buttery goodness and dined with reckless abandon on my regal crustacean. Suffice it to say that this “King of the Bering Sea” was an epicurean dream!
The evening of sweet, heavenly decadence continued. Shall I end with a towering bag of chocolate, tangy lemon meringue pie, a fluffy slice of coconut cream pie or layers of carrot cake topped with cream cheese frosting and a drizzle of candied caramel? That carrot cake was as sinfully delicious as any I’ve tasted. (The countless situps and running miles I’ve logged since my capricious evening at Truluck’s have barely mitigated the caloric damages, but assuredly I’d do it again in a heartbeat!)
